Chandler Rotary
chartered in 1934
OREOS (Ocotillo Rotary Excursions and Outings for Seniors) was originally started by Joe Hendel (a former Rotarian) about 4
years ago. Joe would take his father out fishing. His father, a resident of Pennington Gardens, would invite a few other residents
to attend. From there it grew to giving seniors in nursing homes an opportunity to have an outing once a month to experience
activities outside the nursing home environment. Rotarians have treated the seniors to restaurant meals, trips to Dugan’s Dairy,
museums, symphony performances at the Chandler Center for the Arts, Showstoppers at Casino Arizona and IMAX Theatre. If
there is a cost involved with the outing, the Rotary club pays about half and the seniors pay the balance.
Since Joe is no longer directly involved in Rotary, Diane Siems from the Chandler Rotary has continued the OREOS tradition.
Diane says, “It’s great to see the smiles on the seniors’ faces and they look forward to our monthly outings.”
